The North Arm Cove Initiative is a project aimed at preserving and sustainably developing a unique part of Australian urban heritage in North Arm Cove. The initiative focuses on building a sustainable, resilient community based on circular economy principles, community-driven planning, and collaboration among landowners, industry, and research partners.
Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin were visionary architects and urban planners who designed the original North Arm Cove layout in 1918. Their plan emphasized spacious open areas, tree-lined boulevards, and waterfront access, reflecting an early vision of sustainable urban planning. Our initiative works to honour and revitalise their legacy in a modern context.
Community involvement is central to the initiative. Residents and landowners participate in planning through citizen juries or assemblies, helping to shape governance, infrastructure, and development priorities. This community-driven approach ensures the project reflects the needs and values of the people who live there.
In recent years, the area has faced issues like illegal dumping, unauthorized land clearing, and timber poaching. The initiative promotes a new model for managing and protecting these lands, balancing residential opportunities with environmental stewardship through responsible governance and community engagement.
